The short answer: everything.
Specifically, all manner of books are being banned and challenged, including:
- Books with LGBTQ themes, or written by LGBTQ authors
- Books featuring people of color, or written by people of color
- Books that discuss sexual assault, and/or the survivors of sexual assault
- Educational books about human sexuality
- Board books
- Picture books
- Graphic Novels
- Classical Literature
- Books that address racism
Below is a sampling of some of the books that have been banned across the United States. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it will give you an idea of what types of stories are being targeted for erasure from our public schools and public libraries. It will also highlight the absurdity of some of these bans and challenges.
Want to learn more about a particular book? Unite Against Book Bans is an American Library Association initiative that has brought together publishers and librarians to pull together “Book Resumes” on commonly banned books. When applicable, links to these Book Resumes are provided.
